Elementary School




Grandma did not attend Kindergarten because it was a 6-week program during the summer. Her brother, Kirk, had just been born and they were moving from Moccasin to Kanab.  She was always sad that she didn't get to make a wooly lamb out of cotton balls and the other kids in kindergarten did. This was the site of the second elementary school in Kanab which opened around 1952. When it opened her class packed up their books and walked from the old school to the new one. Grandma attended school here from the 3rd grade to the 6th grade.

  Dan's Store Site Address:  93 W Center St, Kanab, UT 84741 This is where Grandma's family went grocery shopping.  She would stop by here on her way home and buy chocolate chips on her parents' store account (an old-fashioned kind of credit card). When her dad came home from working on the range, he would munch on the chocolate chip cookies. The store was owned  by Dan Frost, who was Great Grandpa Fred E Heaton's friend.

Grandma Slade's Childhood Home Address:  160 N 200 W, Kanab, UT 84741 Grandma broke her front teeth when she fainted in the driveway.   She made her dad homemade bread when her mom was in the hospital in Salt Lake.

Kanab Library

Kanab Library Address:  13 N 100 E, Kanab, UT 84741 The schools did not have a library. This was the only library in town. Grandma would stop here after school and get books including Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Little Women and others.
